about

Inspiration, Summer 2014. Upon a field course deep in the heart of the True American West and therein learning how to read the (present) earth in search of keys to the past. Endeavoring for the table scraps and refuse of our antecedents, finding that littering is an American tradition, centuries old. Wading through yellow slime-bottomed creeks to snatch up and gather data from fresh water macroinvertebrates, data concerning the effects of livestock on fresh water streams, and catching instead giardia, leeches and their larvae, parasites, and sundry pestilences borne by tainted waters. And each day's end was spent beneath miles of swirling stars, facing the sunset still burning long into the next morning, ruminating the five preceding extinctions and the dawning of our race's obsolescence. Then one afternoon while hiking Mount ******, not far along on the journey, still below the tree line, something crawled up through the epochs to overwhelm. An awful thing from unfathomably deep beneath the known world. Governed by fire and light, but blacker than Appalachian coal and heavier than the accumulated contents of every earthen deposit for every Homo sapiens that's ever marred the face of this earth: a thing which called itself T∆PHŌS NŌMOS. With an appendage of flame it reached out and gave voice to its elegy for one, weedy species. This, then, is the celebration in honor of the end to this legacy of fools and gluttons--fools and gluttons who, first through stupid accident and then continuing on with devilish cunning, destroyed (and continue to destroy) countless fauna and flora. In honor of passing beyond the half-life of that parasite which calls itself humankind: three songs in which nature, in LL its eloquent indifference, overtakes human existence.

These three songs were written the following Fall and Winter.

Recorded at The Cairn in the Spring.

Cassette released in late Spring on Caligari Records.
